Now if these stories aren't convincing, all you need to do is troll through the histories of the myriad of
mining areas during the gold rush era. In 1851 Australia followed suit and the Australian
gold rush saw the population of Australia triple in nine years. New Zealand experienced a gold rush in 1861 and
their population also grew massively. While past price appreciation never guarantees future growth, these silver
dollar values have consistently trended upward over time.
What has happened recently is that many amateur investors rush in without doing their homework and buy off plan,
fuelled in part by the many agents out there who are pushing off plan developments as THE way to make money. How
the Gold Rush made California (or was it the other way around). Almost at the same time the Gold Rush stories made
California a worldwide symbol for instant riches.

I find the stories about the California Gold Rush era fascinating because at few other times across the course
of human history, could a person of modest means potentially achieve great wealth. The Gold Rush was the great
equalizer. Those who came late to the gold rush went home with little or nothing and most lost money.
As a history major, we studied the gold rush of 1849, the 19th century oil booms, the stock market hustles
of the late 1920's, the get rich-quick mail order schemes of the 1950's and 60's and now the "Internet" gold rush
of the late 1990's and early 21st century. I therefore reiterate the point that I made at the start of this
newsletter - the Internet Gold rush is surely only just beginning and the very fact that you are reading this
article puts you way ahead of the vast majority of the rest of the World. In reality, the easiest and surest way to
make money in any gold rush is selling tools to the prospectors.

What is confusing, though, is why a very similar Gold Rush twenty years earlier has been so comparatively
ignored. This is a quaint little old west town that was Hugh during the gold rush; gold was first discovered here
in 1890. Then when the rush was over all the people left and it almost became a ghost town.
Made famous by the Klondike Gold Rush and the works of Jack London and Robert Service, the Yukon River shares
the position of second longest river in North America with the Missouri and Mississippi rivers.
